A listing for a former school being offered as a potential multifamily home has gone viral thanks to a disturbing image taken inside its basement laundry room.
The sprawling property, which is located in Carlinville, IL, and is on the market for just over $1 million, is causing quite a stir online after netizens spotted something fishy on the floor of one of the rooms — making some suggest the 28,656-square-foot Schoolhouse is “haunted.”
While the listing for the sprawling 56-bedroom building, which was built in 1938 and formerly known as the South School, notes “fresh paint” and “changed flooring” in “several” of the units, it’s an area in untouched appearance that is attracting more attention.
“I have a feeling something bad happened here,” one person wrote while sharing images from the listing with a “probably haunted” tag on Reddit.
The original poster didn’t reveal the exact source of their concern, but a quick swipe through the attached images quickly reveals why they were so convinced the property has a dark past: a red blood stain on the floor of one of the two coins -laundry rooms.
“Something bad happened here”
Many of the images of the former school show a fairly traditional-looking building with many original features, such as a brick exterior, wide central staircase and green flooring.
But then netizens spotted a gruesome photo of a shabby laundry room with peeling paint on the walls, a red substance on the floor and old machines that have seen better days.
A small door with a lock, sloping and cracked plaster ceilings and a tangle of ropes add to the horror movie atmosphere.
Some were convinced that the red stain on the floor was a clear indication that something bad had happened in the building, with one person commenting: “Oh, there’s definitely something terribly wrong.”
“Maybe the serial killer who ran this place is retired or too old to run the killer’s house. Maybe they should just sell and move on,” joked another.
However, others were quick to insist that the splatter was probably just spilled paint.
“That’s paint in the laundry room … I think,” wrote one, while another added: “Definitely paint, dried blood isn’t that bright.”
Another agreed, “That’s absolutely paint. The prison damage from the stairs/corridor is a little ominous, I agree, but at least there’s no blood all over the laundry room floor.”
Of the general vibe, others chimed in, with one posting, “Yep, definitely no disembodied child voices.”
Another pointed out that the former academic building did not look like a residential property at all. “This is a palace? It looks like an old high school!”
One joked, “I love it. Those corridors would be perfect for a skating fan.”
Another noted that the building may have a cinematic future, or at least a place in Netflix’s queue. “Next season of ‘Stranger Things’ set,” one noted, referring to the popular sci-fi mystery series set in a 1980s Indiana town.
Historic house
Built in 1938, the property went on the market in March 2024 for $1,358,000. The price has since come down to its current amount, and, dreaded laundry room aside, it’s now quite a steal at $38 per square foot.
Across two buildings, the property offers 56 bedrooms, 24 bathrooms and 28,656 square feet of living space. It is located on an area of 0.82 hectares.
Despite some of the uninviting photos, the Realtor.com® listing notes that the investment property is an income-generating machine with little or no vacancy.
A “cheap unit only lasts a few days,” the listing notes.
As for the units, “some are three-bedroom apartments with lofts, 16-foot ceilings and balconies that each have central air and water heaters along with stoves, refrigerators and dishwashers,” according to the description.
Other units offer two bedrooms, some with balconies. They also come with central air and kitchen appliances.
The property boasts “property improvements”. Maybe that creepy laundry room was overlooked during the updates?
“Each building has its own coin-operated laundry room,” the listing says. “Both buildings were known to be South School and are solid, very nicely remodeled about 20 years ago and well maintained over the years with full occupancy.”
In fact, the investment appears to be sound, with net operating income calculated at $104,072. That’s after operating expenses of about $52,000.
The property is located in historic Carlinville, 40 miles from the state capital of Springfield. The city features fall festivals, including Christmas in Carlinville.
