A couple in Texas spent $ 60k building their dream home in a charming rural area near their big city hometown – using only two 40 ft. Transport containers.
Lexi Newkirk, 24, and her husband, Diego, 25, wanted to escape the city’s life in Austin, so they bought 12 and a half hectares of land in a rural area not far from a modest $ 180,000.
The duo have always loved unique homes and decided to make a small house from the shipping containers – for which they paid only $ 5,500 each.
Diego – who works on mold removal – spent last year building containers at 640 sq. ft. One bedroom house and a bathroom.
The duo now hope to have been fully completed until early March – they will live there as they work on the rest of their land, where they hope to create a proper home.
Lexi, an owner of a digital marketing agency, said, “We love it.”
“We’re living in 12 and a half hectares and I love it-it’s like our little city.”
Lexi and Diego both grew up in Austin and were willing to leave the rapidly growing capital. They bought their land – which they called Livingstone Ranch – in October 2023.
Lexi said, “We grew up in the city and wanted to save them.”
The duo had initially wanted to turn their land into a “small exotic Airbnb” farm building 15 to 20 small unique houses – but could not get permission for a trade project.
Instead they decided to take the concept and build a small house for themes only.
Single -use containers surrendered after the couple marked their way and place for their home in November 2023.
They build a foundation and base before the contents are collected on one another.
Lexi said: “We made the lead, electric, we set a septic tank. We had to drive about 300ft electricity. “
The Coupleifi lived in a renewed RV – which they bought on Facebook Marketplace for $ 4,000 – while they finish the container home.
They have been making the house little by little to spread costs. Diego has done most of his work.
Once the drywall is finished, they will decorate, aiming to finish the project in just one month.
Lexi said: “The living area and the kitchen is under it. Then we have a bedroom, master bath and office. The bedroom wakes up until the sun rises and from the baths you can see the sunset. “
Lexi and Diego hope to save on making a barndominium – a barn conversion – and have bought chickens and two cows to build their home dream.
Lexi said: “We didn’t want to make them money towards an apartment. Where my mum lives is a lot of houses on one another. They are all alike. “
“We want to give people inspiration for different projects you can do.”
